Offsetting Approach

ESCRS offset the estimated carbon emissions of the Winter Meeting 2024 using a methodology based on the detailed calculations of the Winter Meeting 2023.

This consistent approach reflects ESCRS’s strategic commitment to sustainability through the Mission Zero campaign. The calculations includes both travel-related and local emissions associated with the meeting, with data from 2023 serving as the reference point for the estimates used in 2024.

To ensure meaningful climate action, offsets were sourced through South Pole and applied across a diverse portfolio of Gold Standard-certified projects supporting clean technology, improved livelihoods, and renewable energy access in communities around the world.

Nam Pha Gnai Hydro, Lao PDR

GOLD STANDARD-CERTIFIED

This run-of-river hydropower station generates renewable energy from flowing water, displacing electricity produced by burning fossil fuels. The project supports energy self-sufficiency in Lao PDR and contributes to low-carbon, sustainable development across Southeast Asia.

Bamako Clean Cookstoves, Mali

GOLD STANDARD-CERTIFIED

This project distributes modern, fuel-efficient cookstoves to reduce deforestation and smoke-related health risks. By improving cooking conditions and reducing emissions, it supports local livelihoods and climate protection in Mali.

Household Biogas Plants, India

GOLD STANDARD-CERTIFIED

This project installs household biogas units across rural India, converting cattle dung into renewable biogas for cooking and heating. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions, replaces firewood use, and strengthens local waste management and community resilience.
